Mateusz is a head of the MCLL and an Associate Professor of the Jagiellonian University ("prof. UJ"), holding a Habilitation in psychology and a Ph.D. in philosophy. He is primarily affiliated within the Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, JU. Mateusz is also an associate member of the Centre for Brain Research, JU, and a lecturer at the Cognitive Science Programme and the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences, JU. His research focuses mainly on two fields: mathematical cognition, i.e., neurocognitive mechanisms of processing numbers and geometric structures, and conceptual and methodological issues in cognitive neuroscience. He has recently been interested in cognitive and affective dimensions of numerical processing in populations with mathematics learning problems and in aiding learning with neuroscientific evidence-based educational tools. He is also pursuing a project on enhancing problem-solving processes through the use of cognitive artifacts. He published three books, including “Foundations of geometric cognition” (Routledge, 2020), and several papers in journals such as Psychological Research, Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, Animal Cognition, Acta Psychologica, PeerJ, Frontiers in Psychology, Foundations of Science, Theory & Psychology, Journal of Computational Neuroscience, Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience, Synthese, Scientific Reports. He also co-edited five books, e.g., “The concept of explanation” (CCPress, 2017), and special issues of Theory & Psychology (2019) and Synthese (2021). Mateusz is a member of European Society for Cognitive Psychology (ESCOP), Mathematical Cognition and Learning Society (MCLS), Commission for Philosophy of Sciences of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Polish Society for Cognitive Science. He also belongs to the editorial board of Frontiers in Psychology. Mateusz received a number of awards and scholarships, including the “Start” Scholarship of the Foundation for Polish Science, the Scientific Prize of “Polityka” (one of the most read Polish weeklies), and the Scholarship of the Minister of Science and Higher Education for outstanding young scientists. In addition to research, Mateusz is involved in many popular science projects and book translations. Outside working hours, he is a big fan of new technologies and tech gadgets, a drone pilot, and an aerial photographer. He lives in Krakow with his beloved wife and cat.

Piotr holds Master’s degrees in cognitive science and religious studies (both from Jagiellonian University). He received the Perzanowski Prize for the best Master’s dissertation (2021). He is an author of a paper published in Consciousness and Cognition. Piotr divides his brain-time between working on a Ph.D. thesis concerning agency detection at the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences of JU (supervisor: Mateusz Hohol), investigating elementary numerical processing and cognitive artifacts in the MCLL.

Bartosz holds Master’s degree in biotechnology from the University of Silesia in Katowice. He is a co-author of papers published in PLOS One, Insects, Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, Journal of Pest Science, Open Life Sciences, Molecules, Zoomorphology, Scientific Reports, European Journal of Entomology, Acta Neurobiologiae Experimentalis and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS). He has led the project (DI2015 0254 45) funded by the Diamond Grant V programme. He was awarded the Scholarship of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for academic excellence in 2017. He is a corresponding member of the Polish Ethological Society and a longtime co-organiser of Brain Awareness Week celebrations in Katowice. Bartosz works on his Ph.D. dissertation on mechanisms of geometric cognition in insects at the University of Silesia in Katowice (supervisor: Mirosław Nakonieczny) and at the MCLL under co-supervision of Mateusz Hohol.

Sabina graduated in law, with the School of French Law, at the Jagiellonian University. For many years involved in the organization and production of cultural events in the city of Kraków. She is a member of the Copernicus Center team responsible for the organization of major events and a coordinator of the Copernicus Festival. As our Lab Manager, she helps us to achieve a good workflow.

She holds a Ph.D. in psychology from Jagiellonian University. As a lecturer, she is involved in BSc. and MSc. neuroscience programmes at the JU. In her research, she uses various methods, including electroencephalography (EEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), eye-tracking, pupillary response, electromyography (EMG), and electrocardiography (ECG). She is co-author of numerous papers in journals such as Brain Structure and Function, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, PeerJ, Frontiers in Psychology, Psychoneuroendocrinology, Biological Psychology, Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience, Vision Research, Perspectives: Studies in Translation Theory and Practice, Acta Psychologica, and Scientific Reports. Kinga collaborates with the MCLL in fields of embodied mathematical cognition and affective dimensions of mathematical processing.

Full Professor, Director of the Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University. He holds PhDs both in law and philosophy. He has authored or co-authored several book monographs, co-edited over twenty collections of essays, and published more than 100 papers and contributed chapters. His multifaced research interests include legal philosophy, philosophy of mind, theories of reasoning, history of ideas, and mathematical cognition. He collaborates with the MCLL in the scope of both philosophical investigations and empirical studies on mathematical cognition.

Grzegorz Nalepa is a full professor of computer science and the head of the Department of Games Technology Research at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy, and Applied Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University. He was a visiting professor at universities in Murcia, Wuerzburg, Bozen, Siegen, Kassel and Almería. Grzegorz is involved in artificial intelligence, cognitive and affective computer science, data science as well as contextual computing. He is the author of around 300 papers, chapters and conference proceedings published in journals such as Scientific Data, Sensors, Applied Sciences, Information Systems Frontiers, Expert Systems, Future Generation Computer Systems, IEEE International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence, IEEE International Conference on Data Science and Advanced Analytics. He has started a collaboration with the MCLL in the fields of affective aspects of mathematical cognition and developing interactive technological assistance for mathematical learning and education.

Łukasz holds a Ph.D. in psychology and is an assistant professor at the Institute of Psychology of the University of Silesia in Katowice. In addition to psychology, he also has an educational background in sociology. His research interests include psychology of science, evolutionary psychology, and the processing of concepts. Łukasz published three scientific books, several papers in journals such as Current Psychology, PeerJ, Personality, and Individual Differences, Current Issues in Personality Psychology, and Evolutionary Psychology, and a popular science book about psychological aspects of humor, joking, and laughing. He collaborates with the MCLL in the scope of research on the impact of imagination on the magnitude and numerical processing.
